Shawnee Counseling Center Earns CARF Accreditation, Recognized for Community Impact and Commitment to Recovery (2026 Report)

A major milestone for Shawnee Counseling Center and a testament to over eight years of service to the Southern Ohio recovery community.

Shawnee Counseling Center (SCC) is proud to announce that it has earned its inaugural One-Year Accreditation from CARF International, following an independent evaluation conducted September 21–23, 2026.

The accreditation, effective through September 30, 2027, recognizes SCC’s substantial conformance to internationally recognized standards for health and human services.

In its official report, CARF praised Shawnee Counseling Center’s organizational leadership, community relationships, compassionate approach to treatment, and commitment to helping individuals build meaningful lives in recovery.

What Is CARF International, and Why Does Accreditation Matter?

CARF International is an independent, nonprofit accrediting organization that has established benchmarks for quality in health and human services for more than 50 years.

CARF accreditation is awarded following a rigorous evaluation of an organization’s policies, operations, service delivery, leadership, and commitment to continuous improvement.

For individuals seeking treatment, families navigating addiction, and community organizations looking for trustworthy partners, accreditation provides an important measure of accountability.

It demonstrates that a provider is committed to meeting recognized standards, responding to feedback, and continually improving the quality of its services.

What CARF Recognized About Shawnee Counseling Center

Beyond the accreditation decision itself, CARF’s report identified six notable areas of organizational strength that distinguish Shawnee Counseling Center within the recovery community.

Deep Roots in Southern Ohio

For more than eight years, Shawnee Counseling Center has served individuals experiencing substance use and mental health disorders throughout Portsmouth and surrounding communities.

CARF specifically recognized SCC’s longstanding commitment to high-risk and underserved populations, acknowledging its dedication to meeting critical behavioral health needs throughout the region.

Multiple Pathways to Recovery

Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all process.

CARF praised SCC’s understanding of rehabilitation principles and its recognition that individuals can follow different pathways toward recovery.

This philosophy extends beyond addressing substance use. SCC recognizes the importance of healthy relationships, community connections, independence, and meaningful employment in building a sustainable life in recovery.

A Strengths-Based Approach to Young People

One particularly noteworthy finding concerned SCC’s approach to children and adolescents, including young people with histories of involvement in the justice system.

CARF highlighted the organization’s commitment to resilience and its belief that an individual’s past does not have to define their future.

Rather than focusing solely on past challenges, SCC emphasizes personal strengths, potential, and opportunities for positive change as it develops services for younger populations.

Trusted Relationships Throughout the Community

Strong recovery communities are built through strong relationships.

CARF recognized Shawnee Counseling Center’s established connections with schools, correctional institutions, and other community stakeholders.

The report specifically noted SCC’s trustworthy reputation and the recognition it has earned for delivering compassionate, quality-focused care.

These relationships help create pathways to treatment, support, and new opportunities for individuals who need them most.

A Strong Operational Foundation

Effective treatment requires more than good intentions. It requires responsible operations, thoughtful planning, and a commitment to safety.

CARF identified SCC’s administrative foundation as a significant strength, highlighting its emphasis on resource management, safety, and risk mitigation.

These organizational practices support SCC’s ability to serve clients responsibly while continuing to strengthen its programs.

Hands-On, Compassionate Leadership

CARF also recognized SCC’s leadership team for remaining actively involved in programming and maintaining a collaborative relationship with staff.

The report praised leadership’s ability to balance staff empowerment with direct oversight, while remaining attentive to the needs of both clients and employees.

This hands-on approach reflects a culture in which compassionate care and organizational responsibility go hand in hand.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Shawnee Counseling Center’s inaugural CARF accreditation is an important achievement, but it is also a commitment to continued growth.

The accreditation report recognized SCC’s substantial conformance to CARF standards while identifying opportunities for further improvement. As part of maintaining accreditation, SCC will continue its quality improvement efforts and address CARF’s recommendations.

With plans to expand services for children and adolescents and strengthen pathways toward employment and independence, SCC remains focused on addressing unmet needs throughout Southern Ohio.

The mission remains the same: helping individuals move beyond addiction and mental health challenges toward healthier, more independent, and more fulfilling lives.
